Cool Video: What is improvisation? This video will tell ya…

With the previous blog post of bringing up “improvisation” when discussing Neil Young, to those who are new to all this, this youtube videoblogger is right on the money of what “improvisation”, really is. Being able to play what you hear in your head, to keep it small and simple. This is one technique in music I’m trying to improve on and slowly getting better too! I do want to be a “master” improviser at guitar, but it takes time. Like I said before, the key to being good at improvising is memorizing the sound of the notes in your head, by singing along with it and stuff. All that jam band stuff like the Grateful Dead, Phish or DMB, those are all improvising bands. Led Zeppelin were an improvising band during their live concerts back in the 70’s.

“Improv”, I believe is the most overlooked technique in music. Not a lot of guitarists around here improvise and they don’t really have a good ear when they don’t want to admit it. They just noodle around until they hear something good.

When you get good at improvising, and will be able to play everything you hear, that’s when you know that you just became a real musician. This teacher, Andrew Wasson, is one of the best guitar teachers in youtube too. I follow his videos on a regular basis.

Foo Fighters/Neil & Young Crazy at Global Poverty Project in NYC review…

CORRECTION: Neil Young and Crazy Horse did play a few new songs from their upcoming new album, “Psychedellic Pill”. Their song they played, “Walk Like a Giant” is a new song, my bad.

So I watched the live viewing on youtube of the Foo Fighters, Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert at the Global Poverty Project event in NYC. A serious event to raise money for a good cause. I know the Black Keys were a part of this concert too, but I missed their set. I did catch the Foo Fighters and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The Foo Fighters played a short set, but they were pretty tight. They played mostly their hits, of course, but they were fun to see. My only problem is that Dave talks a bit too much in between songs, and he can get kind of annoying with the crowd. Other than that, they played an incredible set, I am a fan of the Foo Fighters as I own quite a few of their albums in my CD collection.

As for Neil Young & Crazy Horse, they were just phenomenal and they killed it, like Neil usually does. When Neil walked on stage, you don’t see him wearing any fancy clothing, he just wears casual things. Just jeans, a t-shirt and he wore a red flanel coat. It was just Neil and his guitar. Neil Young and the band played mostly recognizable classics. I recognized “Ontario”, “Fuckin’ Up”, “Walk Like A Giant”, “Needle and the Damage Done” (solo acoustic) and “Let the Good Times Roll” (solo acoustic). Of course, they had to close their set with their most famous song, “Keep On Rockin’ In the Free World”, which they had the Foo Fighters and the Black Keys jamming with them on that one.

I love the way Neil performs on stage, ’cause he is a phenomenal lead guitarist. One thing I’m disappointed in that when the Foo Fighters were on stage, the live viewing got like 18,000 views, and when Neil got on stage, the views got lower and lower, all the way down to about 6,000 views or a little under. I mean, really? I’ve also noticed that some of the crowd were leaving Neil’s set as well.

After seeing all that, kind of hit me. Don’t people know good music anymore? Unfortunately not! Neil is a genius, a fucking legend! A rock n’ roll legend and people weren’t interested in watching him? The man is 66 years old, and he can still rock on that fucking stage! After all that talk about discussing “guitar gods”, I will include Neil in that guitar god category. My belief is that people were getting bored of his long guitar jams. Well, that’s tough people! That’s how Neil always played his concerts. He’s been playing like that for the past 30 years or more. Long 15 – 20 minute guitar jams. Just play guitar for a long time, sing a few lyrics, jam some more,  sing a few lyrics, jam some more, etc. That’s Neil.

Why do rock bands sometimes jam that long? It’s called improvisation. The music stops when it wants to. It’s all about using your imagination. Long jams and improvisations were really big back in the 60’s – 70’s. That kind of music is no longer popular anymore in today’s industry. Neil still sees music that way. Which is why I admire him. That’s what pisses me off about today’s industry. A lot of people would rather see Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj or Jay-Z, when everyone should concentrate on real musicians like Neil Young. While it is a bad time for Neil to still be around, he is still here ’cause music is what he does. He’s not going to give it up until he’s dead.

This is a perfect example of how I’m going to play my live shows when I get a band. Jam out. I love those long guitar jams myself, and I want to rock out like that. It’s why I admire bands like Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Phish, Hendrix, etc. The jam rock stuff. That’s how I played my acoustic shows over the years when I play out. Musicians and bands can’t help it when they play long on stage. That’s what music does to them.

I thought the Global Poverty Project in NYC was interesting stuff, and they put on a good concert too. I’m such a huge fan of Neil. I own a little over 10 of his albums in my collection and still counting. I’m trying to collect his entire discography. Neil is the fuckin’ man and a guitar genius. I’m sure people wanted a better headliner for the Global Poverty Project, but the reason they wanted Neil to headline ’cause Neil is a polio survivor, so it made sense to have him.

When I said that the “guitar god” thing is dead…

Just to clarify one thing real quick, is when I said in that one post about the guitar god thing being “dead”. I’m not disrespecting guitar gods at all. When I said that the “guitar god” thing has ended, it means there is no such thing anymore. In the old days of rock n’ roll, there was such a thing called being a “guitar god” like Hendrix, Jimmy Page,  Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman,  Clapton, Angus Young, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. The meaning of “guitar god”, no longer exists. All we’ve been getting lately in today’s mainstream are copy cats.

If there was to be another guitar god in the future to change the face of guitar playing again, that would be difficult to do ’cause everything has already been done on the guitar. If there were to be another guitar god someday, then they must create something totally original. Which will be difficult to do. I don’t think there will ever be a guitar genius that will change the world of music again, but who knows though, maybe someday, someone will invent a new sound on the guitar.

I don’t think there will be anyone out there that will change guitar history again.

FOX News airs a carjacker shooting himself in the head on live TV… ***WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT***

FOX News have been well known to air car chases live on TV over the years, but this time things get bad. They aired a live suicide on national TV. This is real stuff. It’s not a movie or a TV episode. This is just another reason to hate FOX News. They shouldn’t air police chases on live TV at all. They just do it for ratings. They had plenty of time to turn the cameras off in time, before he did it.

WWE to look for different top superstar instead of John Cena soon???

Reports around the world of wrestling news, are saying that the WWE could be looking for someone new to take over the top spot as a main event superstar. For the last several years or more, the WWE has been shoving John Cena in our faces. Acting like he’s the next Hulk Hogan. Cena, being the hero and the face of the WWE. Well, it looks like those days will finally be over for him ’cause Cena is getting older, and with his age, it may be pretty silly to keep the superhero thing going for him. If they’re looking for a new top superstar, that would be the best time to turn Cena heel, they probably will, hoping.

WWE is looking at Sheamus “The Celtic Warrior” to take over the top spot, but the only problem is, Sheamus’s age.

Usually top babyfaces in WWE are always young guys. Remember, when Hulk Hogan used be around WWE years ago, he was young.

There are other guys in WWE right now that are worth that recognition maybe. In my opinion, if they want a young guy that will fit along the lines of Austin, the Rock (who were young back in the Attitude era), I would pick Wade Barrett, but again, his age, he’s 32. I think the Miz or Daniel Bryan could be the best choice.

See the article, here.

If it’s true that they are finally gonna cut some slack on Cena, that’s cool. I’m getting sick of the guy myself like most wrestling fans.

I’m only interested in reading about Arnold’s bodybuilding and movie career, NOT his personal life and politics…

I know in Arnold’s book, “Total Recall”, there’s going to be a lot of confessions about his affair with that maid and making a child with her and all, but I’m not interested in that stuff. I don’t care about Arnold’s personal life, or political life. I want to read more about his bodybuilding career and films is what I’m most interested in. He inspired me for that stuff. I want to know how he got his first role in, “Hercules New York”, and all the behind the scenes stuff  of all of his films. I want to know how he got the roles for the Terminator and Conan. What ‘its like working with James Cameron and all that stuff. I also want to know more about his friendship with Sly Stallone which he will probably talk about a lot in that book. I want to know why he and Sly never starred in movies together in the past and why they’re doing it now, he’ll explain that too I’m sure. I can’t wait to get the book next week. I want to get it on hardcover as part of a collector’s item, it might be valuable 20 years from now.

Just posted this status in Facebook about Lady Gaga today…

“You all can hate Lady Gaga all you want to, but what she’s doing with this “Body Revolution” stuff is really amazing and inspiring to me. She’s not only doing this to stick up for herself from the media and the critics, she wants to make people feel good and be proud about themselves for their bodies. She doesn’t want people to feel insecure about their appearance, no matter who you are, or what you look like. She wants to help make others feel happy.

As some of you know, I have scoliosis with the Harrington rod. I used to hate being like this but as I got older, I learned to live with it and be proud of who I am. This is part of the big reason I got into bodybuilding, so I can prove people, I can be physical and become even stronger. Yes, I’ve been bullied and made fun of ’cause of my appearance, but I’m tougher than that, I don’t let people get to me.

What she’s doing lately is reminding me of my own life, which is what’s making me speak out on this. Lady Gaga is awesome ’cause her music is positive and she wants to help people, her hit “Born This Way” is something meaningful.

If I ever get to meet her in person, I would thank her for this, big time. She just made me respect her even more. So all you Gaga haters, can piss off. What she’s doing here is wonderful. We all have insecurities. I certainly do, and you do too. We’re all not perfect. We just have to learn to live it with it, and be happy. Thank you Gaga. For this reason alone, I’ll stay loyal to her forever. As for who I am, I was definitely “Born This Way” and proud of it.”

I meant every word I said too!
Yes, she has a lot of gay/lesbian/bi fans, but she welcomes fans of all types. Listen to her lyrics for proof.
I’m a full time die hard fan of Gaga now. I’m not into pop music too much, but I do admire Gaga, Adele and Katy Perry. All 3 of those women are inspirational.

If you’re gonna be a guitar player, you must be good at both rhythm and lead, you can’t just pick one…

I am amazed at the large number of local guitarists around here, who would either be good at rhythm or lead, when the truth is, you must be good at both, if you want to be a respected musician and be taken seriously. I’m all cool with bands who have two different guitarists, one that plays lead and the other that plays rhythm, but I think it’s pretty important, that you need to be good at both. Which is where I’m coming from. I’m doing my very best, to learn both rhythm and lead. Trying to get better at both. It’s good to do both ’cause you need to be versatile and do everything. Sure, you can still play professionally by just being good at rhythm and not play any lead guitar at all but playing guitar solos is a pretty important piece of music. If I ever get a band, I’m gonna do all guitar work myself. I don’t think I’m going to have a second guitarist, which is why I’m trying to get better at both. I’ll admit that I’m not a professional enough guitarist yet, but I’m on my way up there. Still have lots to learn and a lot of work to do.

One of the reasons I picked up the guitar, is that I wanted to be a great lead guitarist like my heroes. I wanted to become a hot lead guitarist. Trying to take lead guitar soloing more seriously. More than just pentatonic scales. I’m talking the modes, theory, arpeggios, and more difficult techniques. I’m slowly moving up to the advanced level. I want to be a great guitar player someday. I’m not saying I’ll ever become a guitar god, ’cause the guitar god thing ended since the 80’s when Van Halen was at the top of the game. I just want to be great. Some people may think I already am great, but I don’t think so. I still got way more to go.

I am practicing and learning still. Studying music is awesome. I love it. Being good at rhythm and lead at the same time, will open many doors to your music life. That’s why it’s important to do both. Just throwing a little two cents in.

Johnny Lewis, possible murder/suicide controversy, sounds just like a scene from “Sons of Anarchy”…

There have been people mourning the death of “Sons of Anarchy” actor, Johnny Lewis who played Half Sack on the show. Why? He murdered an old woman and possibly committed suicide after. A murder/suicide thing. People online are feeling sorry for Johnny. And other people are saying, that Johnny had personal problems and has been arrested a lot before his death. Why feel bad for someone like that? Of course, obsessive fans of this show, are pretty delusional people. They will support any of their favorites no matter what happened to them.

I’ve just started watching, “Sons of Anarchy”, by the way. Still in the middle of “Season 1”. I’m real late starting the show, but I’m really liking it so far. I’ve just seen Johnny playing Half Sack, he was the one who had a crush on Clay’s wife, Gemma.

I know Season 5 of “S.O.A.” just started, but I’m not watching it yet, since I’ve just started the show. I’m already addicted and pretty hooked to this show. It’ll line up with my other favorite TV shows: “Game of Thrones”, “Walking Dead”, “Breaking Bad” and “Dexter”. I wish I got caught up with “S.O.A”. before Season 5, but I’ll just wait  for Netflix to add Season 4 and 5 sometime in the future.

Celebrities have problems. They’re not perfect like you think they are. They’re humans like us.
