Thought: Why a stand alone Han Solo movie, deserves to be told…

I know a lot of Star Wars geeks are probably pissed off at Disney for confirming a Han Solo standalone movie, but I think that story deserves to be told for a lot of reasons. They didn’t just green  light a Han Solo standalone for no reason, folks. It’s not just for money and hyping up Star Wars, I think a back story for Han Solo deserves to be told. Why?

Well for starters, we need to know more details of why Han became a smuggler and all that stuff. We need to know more details on his past with Jabba the Hut, on why he associated with him, in which Episodes “IV, V, and VI”, never did. What about Han’s friendship with Lando Calrissian? How did he get together with Chewbacca? What about Han’s childhood?

Doing a little research on Han’s childhood, he was born on the planet, Corellia, and he was an orphan, so he had no parents. Instead, he was raised by a criminal named Garis Shrike, which could probably explain why Han became a smuggler. I would think the movie would tell that story. According to the info, Han got the Millenium Falcon from Lando by winning a card game. So I would think that scene would be in the film too.

Lando, will probably be a huge part of the movie, so he will be played by a younger actor. That’s about all I’ve read about Han’s past, but I’m sure the writers will add a lot more material. Did Han have a lover growing up before he met Leia? Who knows. They’ll probably get Han involved in a love interest, wouldn’t surprise me.

I think a Han Solo, stand alone would be pretty cool, if made right. So hopefully they do a good job with this one too. I also hope they pick a good actor to play him. There’s no way Harrison Ford could have a cameo in this, but he would probably reprise his role as Han Solo for Episodes “7, 8, and 9”, though.

Vote “kbrocking.com” for Metroland’s Readers Poll!!!

Everybody knows that my blog gets more hits & views than any other local blog around the Capital Region. People just don’t want to admit that they are addicted to my blog and they keep coming here, whether people like me or not. I made the Metroland’s Readers Poll/Best of’s a few times back in 2006/7. I haven’t made any categories since then. Lets see if we can do it this year.

Whether you’re a fan of my blog or just a reader who just comes here for entertainment purposes, you should vote “kbrocking.com” for “Best Local Blog” category.

Take the Metroland’s Readers Poll, this is for local people, only, here.

My blog is different than other local blogs. Blogs like crumbs, Nippertown, and all the Times Union blogs just want to keep everything positive & family friendly. My goal has always been to keep everything honest and real. Not being afraid to say things that people didn’t have the balls to say. This is about reality and always has been.

While this is mainly a musician and singer/songwriter website for my music, I always viewed my blog as secondary.

Lets see if we can make it this year, folks!

Hope everyone in the Northeast is staying safe of the blizzard. The blizzard hasn’t hit here yet, but probably will later on today.

CBS to celebrities at the Grammy’s: “Keep your private parts, private”…

CBS has warned celebrities that if they wore clothing of any kind that exposes private parts, that type of fashion will be banned at the Grammy’s. That means the women are not allowed to show their cleavages and they won’t be allowed to wear see through either. They are not only allowed to show off their breasts, they are also not allowed to show off their genitals or buttocks.

This rule applies to the male celebrities too.

More on the story, here:

I’m sure people are angry at CBS over this new rule. I’m sure people are saying, “Oh, women should have the right to show their cleavages on TV” or “Women should be able to wear what they want to”…. waaaaahhhhh… cry me a river.

Lets be honest here, this is a good move by CBS, and they should have done this years ago. I bet Beyonce’s Superbowl Halftime performance is what pushed them to do it ’cause since her performance at the Superbowl was pretty racy and sexual, other female performers at the Grammy’s were probably gonna try to top it. CBS wanted to put a stop to that.

That’s another thing that I hate about the way the industry works. Seems like music is all about the sex. It always has been. Sex may sell in music, but it doesn’t always have to be. Females in music don’t need to look like strippers or whores to be something. I kind of blame all the sex in music ’cause of Madonna, pretty much. Madonna pioneered the whole sex in music thing.

This is about keeping it clean for the kids and families who watch the Grammy’s.

On top of that, who fuckin’ cares about the Grammy’s, ya know? It has always been a mediocre award show like all the others. I can’t stand commercial and mainstream music.

Will I ever make my first official album, sometime? I’d love to but…

… the only problem is the budgeting. Making my first real album is something I’ve been wanting to do for years, but it’s the money. I can easily record a bunch of songs in the studio anytime. I could probably save up for studio time easily, but it will cost even more money for mixing, mastering, and all that stuff. If I have other musicians record instruments in the studio for a full band album, that would cost even more money ’cause I know some musicians will be expecting payment. If I make an album, it would be a $10,000 project. It would also cost even more for CD manufacturing.

I would like to make my first album with great sound quality, ’cause I think people WILL take my music seriously more if I did a studio album. I already did record in the studio for acoustic stuff back in 2006, but that was just a demo, though.

If I do an album sometime down the road, it would probably be an online only release ’cause no one is buying CD’s anymore to begin with, so what’s the point of making an album on CD? If I can make an album down the road, I’ll make it available to download at Itunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, etc. Online only release albums is cheaper, I think. Bands are wasting so much money on CD duplication, when they can just simply do an online exclusive release.

Before anyone asks, NO, I will NEVER do fan funding projects with kickstarter or pledgemusic. I’m sure those funding websites are legit and they really work. I just won’t be any part of the fan funding stuff. It just makes you look bad and desperate for money, but that’s just my opinion. You don’t need to rely on your fanbase for money, when you should be rewarding them with your music instead.

For now, this is why I just record my songs doing home recording on Mp3’s. They may not be the best quality since it’s home recording, but at least it helps gets my songs heard.

I’ll also admit, I kind of would like a bigger career in music. I would love to perform the larger clubs and bigger stages, sure, and maybe even go on tour on my own budget, but another problem with that is transportation. I don’t drive, and am going to look into getting my license this Spring/Summer ’cause I want to be out gigging a lot more if possible.

It’s nice to know that people really like my music out there, for reals. I know I haven’t released any new tunes in a while lately, but the more I hear people enjoy my stuff, the more it makes me want to get back into songwriting again, and I have been messing around with stuff. For now, though, while people are waiting for new music, I could get back into doing cover songs again.

Netflix’s original TV show, “House of Cards”, is very addicting!

Now you can add David Fincher’s TV show for Netflix, “House of Cards”, to the list of my favorite current TV shows. So far, I’ve watched 6 episodes of the show on Netflix, and can’t get enough! It’s surprisingly really good! Great writing, and acting by the cast! This is Kevin Spacey’s best acting in his career, and Kate Mara (who is Rooney’s older sister) is a pretty good actress too. It’s about this guy named Francis Underwood, who is a ruthless Congressman, and he is desperate to become President of the United States, and would do just about anything to get there. David Fincher didn’t direct all of the episodes this season, Joel Schumacher directed some too. I’m halfway through this season, and there are 13 episodes.

It’s a pretty realistic show and pretty entertaining. I was skeptical of this show at first, but after checking out a few episodes, I was immediately hooked!

Is Netflix the future of TV? Absolutely! “House of Cards” is becoming a big hit, so I’m sure there will definitely be more seasons in the future. I’m also sure Netflix will create more original TV shows and movies.

If you have nothing to watch on Netflix, I would recommend you check this show out yourself. You can tell this show is a David Fincher creation, ’cause of his unique style. The way he films this show is the similar way he films his big screen movies. Oh, Fincher and Kevin Spacey already worked together once. Remember the film, “Se7en”?

Maybe I am a respected musician after all? It really is hard to tell…

The funny thing about being a musician or singer/songwriter, you can never tell if you’re supported or not. It really is hard to tell whether people like you or not. I know I’ve been complaining a lot about how I get lack of respect for my music and guitar playing, but I gotta stop that. It is turning out that I really do have loyal followers and true fans. It may not seem like it but they’re out there. Sure, there may not be any fan sites of me online and I may have very little followers in my facebook “like” page, but I have quite a bit of lurkers out there who don’t want to admit that they’re a fan of mine.

I put up a rant about the way local musicians support local music this morning. On how they think they are better than the amateurs and the music scene need to treat all musicians with equal respect.  Meaning, they need to leave their egos at the door and support all musicians, regardless of the level of talent they’re in. The reason I put up that rant was not to talk about myself and my music. The problem of this area with local music is what they call, “cliques”. There shouldn’t be any “cliques”. The point of the rant, was that I wanted to vent about that all local musicians need to work on this together, if we want to put on a good local music scene. Even though, you think other musicians and bands are bad players, you should keep that opinion to yourself and support them, anyway. Be more music appreciative.

A woman quoted me that in a facebook music forum, and that post got way over 20 likes, and people gave it some likes on my personal facebook page, so I must be saying the right things, and people are agreeing with it.

I really didn’t want that debate to be about me originally (my original intention was to help make the music scene more positive), but some people replied explaining I do have a loyal fanbase out there and other musicians enjoy what I do. They also said, that I am a good musician. I do have fans out there, but they said some are silent about it, and some are not. Maybe I am a recognizable music artist and respected, after all! It was good to know that and am honored.

It’s just that I still feel underappreciated and overlooked by the scene, though. I still would like to get some recognition with my music from the scene. Maybe a radio interview, or an online review of my songs, or a newspaper article. Just anything! I know I can’t demand the respect, it has to be earned. One day though, I will create a huge buzz with my music with the local media, just give it time. It’s why I decided to take a long break from songwriting. Start practicing guitar and singing, so I can improve my skills to the next level.  I’m just like every musician, yo. I want my stuff heard and enjoyed by as many people as possible too!

If local super stardom doesn’t happen to me anytime soon, that’s great. I’m just as happy, playing my guitar and rockin’ out ’cause that’s all I care about, really. I still would like to get recognized for it, somehow. I just need to make my songwriting as best as possible and learn new marketing skills. Not only good songwriting, is a way to get recognized for your music, good marketing is key for getting recognized.

Back to the topic, I was talking about, I just want a positive music scene, ya know? Enough of the ego clashing with musicians and we all need to get together and help each other out. Help each other reach the same dreams and goals that you achieved. Instead of being opinionated, bashing, and hating. Get my point?

Star Wars stand alone movies…

Well, Disney made another announcement which is no surprise actually that they plan on making Star Wars stand alone movies for other characters and other stories. Yes, they are still doing episodes “7, 8, and 9”, but they are doing stand alone movies as well. The first stand alone movie they announced, was that Yoda is getting his own film.

I know it seems crazy that Disney is planning Star Wars stand alone films, but like I said before, with the “Star Wars” universe, you could create a whole new generation of stories. That’s what the Star Wars novels and the comics has done.

I would like to see Boba Fett get his own movie, and he probably will. It would be interesting to get some insight on the Boba Fett character and get a back story of him. How he joined the Empire and why he became Darth’s sidekick. Would be interesting. They already did stuff like that with several novels based on the Boba Fett character.

As a matter of fact, Lucasfilm already did Star Wars spin off from the past, I remember, “Ewoks: The Battle for Endor”. Of course, we got the animated Star Wars films as well.

They could do all kinds of stuff with Star Wars.

RIP: Reg Presley (singer of the Troggs) 1941 – 2013

I’m kind of heartbroken and devastated of this passing. Why? Because the Troggs, were childhood heroes of mine. They were partly responsible when I first discovered rock n’ roll, when I was a child. “Wild Thing” were one of my favorite rock n’ roll songs as a child, as I used to sing along to it and play air guitar with it a lot. The Troggs, should be an important influence in all of us. I’m sure we’ve all heard the music of the Troggs growing up. “Wild Thing” has influenced other famous bands and artists, that many of them started covering the song. The song has of course, been most notably covered by Jimi Hendrix, and the late comedian, Sam Kinnison (see videos below). If you don’t know who the Troggs are, then you don’t know your music history and you need to do some learning. “Wild Thing” maybe just three or four simple bar chords, but you can still write an amazing song no matter how easy the chords are. It’s about the melody! While, “Wild Thing” is what made the band famous for, they were great with all of their music as well.

Reg Presley died of cancer, he was 71 years old.

The over hype of Beyonce…

Why is the media and today’s music industry over hyping Beyonce to death? Well for starters, she is now married to rap star, Jay-Z, and he is probably helping her take her career to the next level. If it wasn’t for him, then she wouldn’t have gotten the Obama Inauguration performance or the Superbowl Halftime gig. As expected, the Superbowl Halftime performance was awful. She looked like a stripper and a whore. She also wore a terrible wig and her make-up was bad. Her performance and the dancers were too trashy and it was too inappropriate for a family friendly event.

On top of that, last night was the worst Superbowl in history, I believe. Despite the power outage, it was still a boring as hell game. Both teams played terribly. Well, the 49’ers came back pretty hard for a little bit after the power outage but they still couldn’t get the win for some reason.

As for my favorite commercials, I liked the car commercials where Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips made an appearance on. I also liked the short, “Under the Dome” teaser. The rest of the comedy commercials, I didn’t really care for, but I did like the GoDaddy one with the hot girl making out with a fat guy. Some people said that GoDaddy commercial was offensive and done in bad taste, but I didn’t think it was.

The Superbowl wasn’t that great last night.

The definition of professional musician and hobbyist…

There’s an interesting discussion in facebook that came up, that intrigued me to follow, and people were trying to define what a “professional” musician or a hobbyist is. There were some facebook users getting into that discussion and even I got into it a little bit as well. It seems like everyone has their own definition of what a professional musician is. It has been debated by musicians for years and there is always crazy myths about it. Everyone else thinks their version of “professional” musician is exactly right and thinks they have it defined.

In my opinion, I think a “professional” musician mean 3 different things:

1) If you make good money doing it

2) Your playing ability and skill. If you’re in the advanced level of playing your instrument and pretty much mastered it, you’re a professional.

3) Your professional attitude. Meaning being polite and courteous to everyone. Keeping negative opinions to yourself. Just having a positive attitude as a musician just like you would do on  your day job.

If you have any of those three things, that’s a professional musician, in my book.

A”hobbyist” (or an amateur), is someone who plays music just for fun, and doesn’t really look at it as a job (or a career). A lot of people want to mistakenly view an “amateur” musician as a crappy musician, but that’s not the case here. There are plenty of VERY talented musicians in your hometown and plenty of great guitar players in youtube showing off their stuff, but they play music as a hobby. Just because you maybe an amateur, doesn’t make you talentless. Some of these guys just don’t care to make a name for themselves. So they just play their music at home, show off their talent online or play local open mics occasionally. They never really cared to get big. This is where I fall in.

I never saw myself as a professional musician, even though, some folks out there would mistakenly see me as one. I don’t take the “career” thing seriously, even though some people would like to see me move forward and make a name for myself. I just do it for fun. Period, end of story.

It’s crazy how, most musicians want to see themselves as “professional” ’cause they get so caught up in delusions of grandeur. They all want to see themselves as professional. Think about it. You wouldn’t be a real “professional”, if you weren’t online, trying to define it. Why are they on here, trying to define “professional” musician? I’m not afraid to say this, but it’s gonna be said. It’s because they are scared of the truth. They are worried that they really may not be a “professional” musician, and it’s bothering them a little bit.

If you were a real professional, you wouldn’t be in facebook. You would be working on your albums, playing your gigs, doing your marketing, and just keeping, busy, busy, busy. If you were wealthy and make good money off of music, you wouldn’t be online much. I’m not saying these guys are not, “professionals”, some of them are, but I’m pretty sure a lot of bands around here don’t make a lot of money playing music. Some of these guys are afraid to admit that they are not really professionals, but I’m not afraid to admit it.

Now to be a professional musician, you don’t have to be a big name solo artist, or play in a huge band. You can be just a session musician. Session musicians are considered professional too, but they are smaller gigs. Subbing for members in other bands, and collaborations. Things like that.

To be a professional musician requires those three things I pointed out above: 1) Making a living off of music 2) Having the skill and talent 3) Having a good attitude. All those counts. If you don’t have any of those, then you don’t have a right to call yourself a “professional” musician. I’m sorry. Just being realistic here, folks!
