Book Review: “Big in China” by Alan Paul

So I finally bought the book, “Big In China” by Alan Paul, who is a journalist & musician. Alan Paul writes for the Wall Street Journal, Slam magazine (yes, the basketball magazine), and Guitar World. He is also a guitar player and jazz/blues musician.

This book is about Alan Paul who moves to Beijing, China because his wife was offered a job there and she accepted. While living in Beijing, China, they explore the country, trying to get used to a new place. Along the way, Alan ends up forming a blues band there with Chinese musicians called, Woodie Alan. The band Woodie Alan, became big & famous there. The band line up includes, Alan Paul, Woodie Wu, Dave Loevinger, Zhang Yong and Lu Wei. The story tells how the band was formed and how they get their popularity in China. Their anthem song that made them big is a song called, “Beijing Blues” which is a song that I absolutely love.

I read a lot of books, and I would have to say that, “Big In China” was the most inspiring book I’ve ever read. It’s really amazing, and well written. The story was incredible and I couldn’t put it down. There is music everywhere in this world and I never realized music was this big in China until I’ve read this book. I was never really into world music that much, but hearing the music of Woodie Alan, really moved me. It makes me want to get their CD soon.

I really hope Woodie Alan will become big in the “USA” too. They deserve recognition in the United States, and I think that band will get recognition here once Ivan Reitman makes that movie about them.

Back to the book, it’s not just about music. Alan teaches you about Chinese culture and what it’s like living over there. It certainly is different there. He explains how it’s different living in China than in the United States. Once you live in China, it’ll make you want to like living there more than the U.S.

To learn more about Alan Paul and Woodie Alan, check the band’s website, here.

Get the book, and be inspired. This is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. I hope he keeps writing these stories and there will be sequels up ahead?

Why “Battle of the Bands” competitions suck…

So the SPAC Battle of the Bands competition is back. I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubbles but these, “Battle of the Bands” competitions suck. I just need to explain why I think this in detail. If I ever get my own band going sometime, I will NEVER have my band enter silly “Battle of the Bands” competitions. This is something I would never be a part of. It has nothing to do with ego or jealousy, it’s something more serious than that.

Bands in facebook are already entering, and already trying to talk people into voting them if they make it in. Well, of course, band’s will always think they’ll make the top ten.

Here are some reasons on why “Battle of the Band’s” competitions are so wrong. Some may get pissed at me for saying all of this and some may actually agree with me on all of it. I know I’m going to get mixed opinions on this “Battle of the Bands” thing.

  • It’s nothing but a popularity contest – All it is, it just shows what bands who is most popular than who. Lame. I don’t think we need to know what band is more popular than the others.
  • The voting systems are crap – You have all kinds of people vote for your band as much as possible, and you’re pretty sure you got the most votes, but your band didn’t win anyway. I wouldn’t trust the voting system at all. After all that hard work gone to waste.
  • Too many bands on the bill – Some “Battle of the Bands” competitions in the US can have like around 10-15 bands on the show, all for a small price of $15.00.There is something wrong about that picture, think about what that is.
  • Too many different genres in one night – “Battle of the Bands” competitions can range from metal to rock to hip hop to country to acoustic acts. Your audiences will be different because of the genre. If nobody is watching you, then your genre is probably not their cup of tea.
  • The prizes are crap – All you get out of this battle of the bands thing at SPAC is free studio time for a free EP at some studio you’ve never heard of. What if that studio they had you to work at turns out be a crap studio and your demo turns out to be shitty. Don’t be surprised. The other prizes is record a professional music video and airplay at EQX. Sorry but this is bullshit, in my opinion. All bands are capable enough to record their EP, professional music video and get radio airplay on their own without “Battle of the Bands” competitions. Shouldn’t the Grand Prize be opening for a famous national act or get on a bill for a huge festival instead? Think about it, “Battle of the Bands” staff don’t want to pay all that money, so the studio and the music video won’t turn out as good as you think it will be.
  • Judging is usually insignificant – Don’t expect the judging to be brutally “honest” like on American Idol. There won’t be a Simon Cowell in the judging panel. The feedback is usually short and simple, and mostly positive. The feedback is almost always positive, no matter if the band is good or bad just to help hype up the voters. Just a way to help excite the fans of that band.
  • Wrong kind of crowd – Most of the crowd at these competitions are usually family members, co-workers, long time friends, and other musicians being there in support of the band. Not “actual fans“. If you’re lucky enough to get actual fans to vote for your band at this competition, then best of luck. Getting actual fans to support your band at these competitions is pretty rare.
  • Ridiculous set times to perform songs – Most “Battle of the Bands” competitions only give you 10 – 25 minutes to perform your songs, that’s pretty much it. The SPAC “Battle of the Bands” only give you 10 minutes to play. Bullshit, don’t you think? I think so, yes. If you’re an improvising band who loves to jam, don’t be surprised if they cut your song if you go overtime.
  • Jealousy and ego could get in the way with other bands on the show – Don’t be surprised, if you get into a heated argument and get into feuds with other bands at these competitions. It can happen. There might be a little bit of ego clashing for sure.

I’m sure there’s more reasons why, those are just some of them. If I get my own band, I would stay away from these. They may sound exciting, but they are just going to tear you down and you could be upset and sad, if you find out if you didn’t win.

Simply put, you don’t need “Battle of the Band’s” competitions for a good opportunity. You don’t need them to get to the next level with your music. Just keep playing your gigs and making your music, you can get to the next level just by doing that. Huge opportunities will come along the way on it’s own. “Battle of the Bands” is a huge career mistake, in my opinion. Avoid them completely. No offense to anybody. Bands that enter these things are just desperate.

End of rant.

RIP: Tim Hetherington 1970 -2011

Tim Hetherington, a British-American photographer and journalist was killed by a mortal shell or an RPG round while covering work in the city of Misrata, Libya. Tim is best known for his work on the documentary he made with Sebastian Junger titled, “Restrepo”. The film is about Junger and Tim documenting the war in Afghanistan.

“Restrepo” is available for streaming in Netflix for those interested in checking it out. I plan to check it out this weekend. Honestly, I never knew who Tim Hetherington was until I started seeing his name all over the news, but after learning more about him, much respects. He’s quite a talented and brave man. He’s willing to be around dangerous places for his work, which not many photographers can do. RIP, Tim Hetherington.

Did a little shopping today…

So today, I decided to go to the mall for some fun shopping. Didn’t see a movie this time. Nothing good playing in theaters this week. I’m not interested in seeing the new “Scream 4”. I can’t stand the Scream series. I love horror films and slasher flicks, but not “Scream”. I respect Wes Craven for his other work though, the “Scream” series is just poorly written and just boring. I just did some walking around the mall instead.

Today I picked up the new “Mortal Kombat” game since everyone is saying it’s the best one. I’ve played “Mortal Kombat” games for years, so I finally own a “MK” game. It’s supposed to be really good and I’m looking forward to playing it.

I also picked up “Dexter – Season 3 & 4” and “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hollows part 1” on DVD ’cause they were on sale at Target for a good deal. I couldn’t say no to those. I’m sure “Dexter – Season 5” will come out on DVD later this year before “Season 6” starts airing on TV. I’ll buy “Season 1 & 2” on DVD some other time. I love the show “Dexter”, I’ve immediately became obsessed with the show and I just want to keep watching.

Back to posting in the blog, there’s news stuff I need to catch up on. I need to post obits for Tim Hetherington and the TV On the Radio bass player tonight.

Report: “Weird Al” finally parodies Lady Gaga…

You just knew it was going to happen at some point, it was only a matter of time. “Weird Al” finally parodies the Gaga! You just never knew what hit song of hers he would parody like “Pokerface” or “Bad Romance”, but instead it ended up being, “Born This Way”. He titled it, “Perform this Way”, in which he totally rips her in the song.

A bit of controversy came over this though. Al Yankovic tried to ask her permission and he was misunderstood that he was rejected by her.

Al blogged about it, here.

I’ve always loved Weird Al’s music and I’m not guilty to say it too. Can’t wait for his new album.

Enjoy it here.

BREAKING NEWS: K.K. Downing, guitarist of Judas Priest retires from music…

Today is a sad day for music, but understandable. Out of no where, the band Judas Priest announced that the band’s main guitarist, and one of the founding members have retire from music. He will not be playing the, “Epitaph”, tour with the band.

Announced at the band’s official website.

The band is probably going to replace a guitarist, but honestly, it’s not Judas Priest without the great, K.K. Downing. K.K. is Judas Priest. I can’t blame him hanging the boots because he’s been playing in the same band for 40 long years, playing the same songs every show. Can’t blame him for moving on.

I don’t think he’ll be gone from the music business for good though. Maybe he’ll start a solo career or maybe write an autobiography. All good things must come to an end, I guess.

Report: Bret “The Hitman” Hart defends wrestling in WWE!!!

Us wrestling fans are not the only people disappointed with Vince McMahon’s moves on ignoring “wrestling” in WWE. Look else disagrees with this. That’s right, the legendary, Bret “The Hitman” Hart. Bret explains that WWE will always be wrestling no matter how much Vince chooses to ignore it.

Read more on what Bret have to say about the WWE, here.

Bret brings up some valid points. As long as the WWE still has a ring, with wrestlers doing matches in ring attire, then it’s still wrestling, no matter what you think of it. I don’t really see how Vince could call it “entertainment” because it doesn’t make any sense to me.

Even if you don’t like TNA Impact, you should still give that company credit for staying true with “wrestling” though.

Wrestling is important, so it shouldn’t be ignored.

Will be bringing my official music website back…

Soon I’ll be making a new separate “official” website for my music promotion only. That way I won’t confuse the promoters and booking agents with this “entertainment” site. I will bring my official music website back soon. I’ll buy a domain name for it and all that. I’m not giving up this site, I’ll be running both sites at the same time, it’s just that it’s a smart move to keep my music promotion separate from this site. I’m going to think of a plan soon. I will probably bring my “kevbrockmusic.com” domain name back.
