Cool Video: Nice little video on Mastering the Art of Guitar Improvisation…

When I want to learn something new in guitar playing, sometimes I’ll start watching guitar instructional stuff in youtube. Sometimes there are really good guitar teachers in youtube and Andrew Watson is one of the best guitar instructors I’ve seen on the internet.

The secret to mastering the art of improv, is memorizing the sound of all 12 keys of music which is what I’m working on. He is so right, that this doesn’t happen over night. It takes a long time to memorize each key and get a good ear.

I want to be able to play good and tasteful lead guitar solos. Hopefully get better and play more professionally.

Thought: How to put on a good open mic?

Loren Weisman’s blog is starting to become one of my favorite music blogs on the internet.

I know open mic night’s maybe pretty popular in your hometown. The open mics are pretty popular in my area, the Capital District, in Upstate New York. There are open mics all over this area from bars to cafes. I’ve seen some good open mics and seen some bad ones. I’ve seen open mic hosts run the open mic professionally and unprofessionally. I’ve seen a lot of ego clashing with other musicians on open mics too.

How to have a good open mic? Read this blog here, written by Loren Weisman.

Back in the early 90’s, when I was first starting out performing live. I started off playing a bunch of open mics when I was younger. I would pretty much do anything to get actual paying gigs. So I thought performing a bunch of open mics would be a good start. It would be a good start to perform live and help build my confidence up. When I first started performing live, I used to have stage fright. I used to get nervous and scared as hell, in the beginning. Now I’m not scared anymore and have 100% confidence performing in front of an audience.

Open mics are just open mics. They are not “gigs” or actual “shows”, that some musicians mistakenly call them. When I was starting out, I would play just about  any open mic. It didn’t matter if it was a bar or a coffeehouse, and I was underage back then, probably about 18 or 19, I would play at open mics at bars just to get my start.

As I kept playing open mics over the years, I started to get actual paying gigs out of that. That’s what open mics are for.

Open mics are for musicians of all levels, whether you’re an amateur/hobbyist or a professional musician, it doesn’t matter. All musicians are welcome to play at them. They are an opportunity to get musicians together. Meet other musicians, become friends with other musicians and share music with each other just for fun. They are also opportunities to get actual paying gigs and look for musicians to start a band.

I’ve seen open mics where I’ve seen musicians get treated badly ’cause they felt that he/she had no talent. It even happened to me too, sometimes.

An open mic is just an open mic. Musicians today still don’t treat it like one, it’s just that when you run into other professionals on an open mic, they’ll think that they are better than you. Just because you’re a professional doesn’t mean you’re better than others. If you’re a professional, doesn’t make you a perfect musician that you think you are.

I think the amateurs/hobbyists can be just as good. They can put on better performances and they shouldn’t have to get treated badly. I support and treat all talent with respect. Sometimes professional musicians that go to an open treat it like an actual gig, when they need to leave their egos out the door. I’ve seen it happen too.

I haven’t played an open mic or an actual paying gig in a long time though. I do plan on going back to performing live again, once I get a new batch of originals out there.

I love performing live. Performing in front of people can be an amazing feeling. It makes you feel stronger and helps make you a better person.

This Day In Music: 2/10/12

Musician Birthdays: Jerry Goldsmith (US film score composer, famous for composing film scores such as “Star Trek”, “Rambo”, born in 1929), Cliff Burton (bassist for Metallica, famous for the Metallica instrumental, “Orion”, born in 1962)

At the Beatles’ request, the orchestra members arrived in full evening dress along with novelty items. One violinist wore a red clown’s nose, while another a fake gorilla’s paw on his bow hand. Others were wearing funny hats and other assorted novelties. The recording was filmed for a possible ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ television special which was ultimately abandoned. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mike Nesmith from The Monkees and Donovan also attended the session.

Kanye West scooped four Grammy Awards, while Bruce Springsteen won three. The White Stripes, Justin Timberlake, Carrie Underwood and Mary J Blige all picked up two awards.

Rick Santorum is not offensive or hateful at all, he’s actually the most positive candidate there is!!!

In facebook,  I’m seeing a lot of hateful postings against candidate, Rick Santorum. A lot of people say he’s offensive, and hateful about a lot of things. Wrong. Rick is actually the most positive guy than the other three guys. It’s actually Mitt Romney, is the biggest asshole of them all. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich are jerks too. That’s why their scores are getting low in the GOP race.

Rick’s honest thoughts maybe controversial, yes, but at least he has the balls to say what he wants. Rick doesn’t waste time attacking the other candidates. He focuses on the issues and more important things. Never once, I ever heard him say something negative.

Maybe this is why some people can’t stand Rick ’cause they know he’s the most honest than the other three. Rick was never opinionated about anything. He was always pretty factual. That’s why his numbers are going up and why he is kicking ass in the election.

People are starting to give him a little more respect. He improved his campaigns and he’s getting better at his public speeches. Give it time, you’ll start to give him more respect too.

He maybe hard to understand at first, but soon you’ll get it. Where he’s getting at and how he’s feeling about things. He’s just staying true to the Constitution. He also wants what’s best for families and the American people, he actually cares for us.

I’ll always support him.

Thought: About success with music, “Don’t bitch about it, do it”!!!

This blog by Loren Weisman said:

One of the biggest differences I see in artists that succeed over the artists that fail, is when they are faced with a massive, time taking, pain in the ass task or challenge, the ones that suck it up, drive ahead and get right to work are the ones that seem to achieve over the ones that try to find ten ways to make it easier, simpler or spend more time trying to modify the challenge. The ones that procrastinate, complain, wish things weren’t a certain way, or put energy in to blame, just waste time that could be spent productively moving forward. In the end, they waste time, effort and most lose the end result of the desired success. When you got shit to do, do it. Don’t go on to Facebook or grab a drink and bitch about what has to be done, just do it.

Again, another great point that I agree with. A lot of struggling musicians out there like myself go online and complain about how they aren’t getting success, and like I said, I do it too!

If I want success and more popularity, I got to think of a new plan and a new mission.

1. Try to make my music as best as possible.

2. Promote myself as much as I possibly can.

3. Keep a positive & good attitude, be a professional through everything, no matter what happens.

Yes, I’m planning to get my music going again soon. Been writing some songs and messing around with ideas.

I don’t really need another site to promote my music with ’cause I’m probably just going to use this one.

Report: There’s a Princess Diana biopic on the way and she will be played by Naomi Watts…

There is a Princess Diana movie in the works by a Berlin film maker named, Oliver Hirschbiegel, and actress, Naomi Watts, has been hired to play the Princess of Wales in the film. The name of the film is titled, “Caught in Flight”.

This will be a worldwide release. This film will probably get released in the United States, yes, but I’m sure Berlin will get the premiere first.

The Hollywood Reporter, reports.

Naomi Watts is one of my favorite actresses too. She’s a good match for Princess Diana. I love Princess Diana stories so this should be a good movie. Looking forward to it.

Report: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally inducts the Crickets, the Comets, and others…

Both Buddy Holly and Bill Haley may have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame, but their backing bands have never got the induction along with them. Finally, after all these years, Buddy Holly’s backing band, the Crickets and Bill Haley’s backing band, the Comets will get the respect they deserve.

The backing bands of Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Hank Ballard and Gene Vincent will also get inducted.

See the full article, here.

Those are nice inductions and well deserved but they keep snubbing, Crazy Horse (Neil Young’s backing band). When will Crazy Horse ever get their respect? Also, the E Street Band (Springsteen).

Report: Jake Clemons joins the E Street Band for “Wrecking Ball” tour as Saxophonist…

Bruce Springsteen, has expanded the E Street Band, adding more musicians to the lineup. Jake Clemons, who is the nephew, of the late Clarence Clemons, will join the E Street Band for the tour, playing the Saxophone, taking over his Uncle’s role in the band.

See the news at Springsteen’s site, here.

Jake Clemons has his own solo project going on for a long while, to learn more about him, you can check out his official website, here.

I guess, Jake is a good replacement. His sax playing is similar to Clarence’s style, listen below.

All done watching “24” on Netflix, finally!!!!

Last night, I finally finished watching “24” on Netflix. Yes, I finished watching the last of Season 8, the final season. It was quite a ride watching the show. It seemed like it took me forever to watch the show since it was so long, but I went through it. I just couldn’t stop watching and was pretty obsessed with the show. I did like all seasons, but I’m going to rank  the seasons in order of which ones I loved the best:

6, 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, 7, 8

Yes, I still think Season 6 was the best Season of them all, ’cause it was Kiefer’s best performance.

I really can’t wait for the big screen, “24” movie. I hope it will be a good plot. Hope it will have good action and hope it will be more violent and dark than the TV show. I can now understand why everyone wants a “24” movie ’cause Jack Bauer is still alive at the end of the show and people wanted more. I just hope the “24” movie won’t suck and that’s what I’m worried about.

Now that I’m done with “24” on Netflix, I’m planning to start “Breaking Bad” on there later tonight. I’ll catch up with the 4 seasons before Season 5 later this year. Season 4 of “Breaking Bad” is not on DVD yet but it will be coming soon. I’ll just watch the first 3 seasons on Netflix and will buy Season 4 on DVD when it comes out. After I catch up with “Breaking Bad”, I’m going to start watching, “Sons of Anarchy”. Those are the next two TV shows, I plan to watch next on Netflix.

I don’t know why people treat Netflix in a negative direction. I love the service, and I vow to keep it.
