Book Review: “Who I Am” By Pete Townshend

Today, I finally finished reading, “Who I Am” by Pete Townshend. I never understood all the hate and disrespect toward Pete Townshend, and the Who. The Who has always been one of the my favorite bands for years. They’ve always been underappreciated and Pete’s guitar playing has always been over looked. Sure, they have been under fire, because of Pete’s never ending pedophile accusations, but no matter what you think of them, The Who, will always be known as one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in the world. Their legacy will never die.

Pete is a guy who invented feedback on the guitar. He popularized what we all know, the power chord. He also popularized guitar smashing and is most famous for his windmill stage move.

This the most compelling rock memoir I’ve ever read. Everything about Pete’s life and music career is there. It starts from his childhood ’til now. Of course, the stuff that interested me the most in the book, is the career of the Who. I loved all the stuff he wrote about the Who’s appearance at Woodstock ’69. I loved reading all the details of the recordings for the legendary albums, “Tommy”, and “Quadrophenia”. I liked reading about Pete’s solo career, and the Who reunion later on in the years. He talked about the “Endless Wire” album and the Superbowl Halftime performance and all that stuff.

The book is not just about music. He has a lot about his personal life with all the women he had over the years. He admitted he hasn’t been faithful and he was a bit of a womanizer. He talked about his addiction with alcohol and drugs. Most importantly of all, the book was mostly about him being a victim of child abuse. Yes, he admitted that he payed to look at child porn websites on the internet, he was arrested, and his home was raided, but in his defense, he did all that for research. It was a mistake in his part and he confessed to it. He is against child porn and he helps other organizations to try to help fight it. It was also research for this book. Pete took part in a lot of child abuse charities and things like that. I think he wanted to publish this book as a way to bring awareness to child abuse. On top of all this, I never thought, Pete Townshend, is a pedophile. I always believed he was innocent and still do. He is just a man who is scared and angry at child abuse. Enough of that talk.

I believe the whole point of the book was that he wanted people to get to know who Pete Townshend really is, hence the title, “Who I Am”. It seems in this book, he wanted to clear the air about things. There was a lot of misinformation about Pete himself and his music career with the Who, and all, he just wanted to correct things. Get people to understand him better. This was the most honest and real rock memoir, I’ve ever read.

Pete Townshend is a guitar playing genius. I’ve always admired the guy. This is a must read for all music lovers and fans of the Who. Read it if you haven’t yet.

Cool Photos: Never before seen photos of Marilyn in New York, taken by 15 year old fan…

This is pretty interesting, I just had to post it. Rare photos of Marilyn Monroe visiting New York City, shortly before she sang “Happy Birthday” to JFK at MSG surfaced the web today. They were taken by Peter Mangone when he was 15 years old. He was also the one who filmed the footage of Marilyn performing at MSG.

Marilyn, all smiles and looking beautiful like she always was. I can see why she dated so many men and had affairs with many of them ’cause you can easily fall in love with someone like her. As soon as you lay your eyes on Marilyn, she immediately makes you smile. That’s how powerful this woman is. She’s very likeable.

See the photos, here.

Speaking of Marilyn, I just watched a 45 minute documentary of her called, “Marilyn In Manhatten”, on Netflix, the other night. It’s very good, even though it’s a short documentary, check it out. Very informative about her stay in NYC.

Report: Black Sabbath to release their new album “13” in June…

Black Sabbath, announced on their official website today, that they will release their new studio album with all new original songs, titled, “13” in June. The album has the original members of Sabbath including Ozzy, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler, except for Bill Ward who declined to be a part of this reunion. The band also released a Greatest Hits album, and announced a short Australian tour.

One thing to keep in mind though, that this could be the last and final Black Sabbath album ever. Why? Because of Tony’s lymphoma cancer. Tony could possibly die soon, and when it’s his time to go, it’ll probably be the end of Sabbath completely ’cause Sabbath was his band. Tony has been an important part of Sabbath for years, even if he’s gone through too many band members. Tony can have other musician replacements in the band, but you can’t replace Tony. Tony is what defines Sabbath’s sound. I can’t see the band going on without him. Even the band members knows that this could be the last days of Sabbath which is why they put out a greatest hits album too and booked a small tour. So these are signs that they are preparing Tony to die. They just want the best of him and make Tony happy before he goes.

Still though, with or without Bill Ward, it’s still gonna be a great fuckin’ album, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. I’m sure Tony is capable of giving us an album full of badass guitar riffs and great solos, despite the cancer. I’m sure Ozzy will still sing great, and I’m sure the lyrics for the new Sabbath album, will be dark and scary.

It’s really sad about, Tony Iommi. The guy is one of the guitar greats, who is responsible for creating the genre, heavy metal, that we all grew up and love. If he passes later this year, it’s going to be a big loss in the music industry. The best we can do is support Black Sabbath, and Tony as much as we can. Their career deserves to go out on a positive note.  Can’t wait for their new album. I’m definitely getting it. I’m sure, the band will release their first new single soon.

Another thing that annoys me about the fitness community online…

In facebook, I’ve been drawn into this bodybuilding debate that intrigued me to join in.This person’s facebook is a pretty well known bodybuilder sensation, and you would probably figure out who I’m referring to, without naming names. Anyway, another thing that bothers me with the online fitness community is all the fanboys who support their bodybuilding hero. If you think the musicians community is bad, the fitness people can be much worse. Whenever this bodybuilder trainer posts something up in facebook or youtube, their fanboys will usually go crazy over everything they post. Agreeing with everything they post and giving them praises on everything. Whenever somebody goes in there and have a different opinion on something or disagree with on a topic, they’ll start bashing you on stuff.

That’s kind of what’s going on here. That’s okay, I don’t mind getting bashed on by a bunch of guys only because my opinion is different, ’cause I’ve been getting some guys giving me thumbs up on my comments, so that stuff lets me know I’m saying the right things.

Whenever you disagree with on a topic, sure enough, the bodybuilder trainer will want to think he’s smarter than you and think he’s right on everything. It’s funny, ya know. They’ll start saying immature shit like, “Well, why don’t you try it” or “You don’t have the good enough physique, so you shouldn’t be calling us out on stuff”, lol. That’s how much of an egotist and a bunch of hypocrites these people can be. Just because they’re bodybuilders, they want to act tougher and smarter online.

Instead of helping each other out in a positive manner, they just want to fight and argue. This is why I don’t support these fitness guys. They can be pretentious and ego-driven douchebags. Not all of them are like this, some fitness trainers online can be friendly, and helpful. There are too many fitness trainers getting into feuds with each other and calling each other out in youtube, I don’t want any part of that stuff which is why I don’t watch their videos too much anymore. There are too many assholes in the fitness world, just like there are too many assholes in the world of music.

Report: “Dexter – Season 8”, which could be the show’s final season, will air sooner than you think…

Showtime announced some major news today, that they will air, Dexter “Season 8”, this summer premiering on, June 30th. The show, “Dexter”, is usually aired in the Fall, around Sept./Oct. Look like they really want to tell the story for Season 8 to everyone, so they got to be airing the next season early for a reason. “Season 7” just finished not too long ago and it did end with a shocker. “Season 8” could supposedly be the shows final season ever, so it will be interesting to see where the story is going to go from here.

See the announcement, here.

2013 is looking to be a great year for TV. “Walking Dead” returning in Feb. “Game of Thrones” is coming back at the end of March, which is what I’m excited for. “Breaking Bad” is returning in the summer. Looking forward to all these shows returning. Love all these shows!

As a musician, you don’t need to prove anything to anybody, just make music…

If you’re a struggling musician like me, trying to get recognized for your talent, or trying to get accepted in the musicians community, don’t worry about any of that stuff. I realize a lot lately, that I’ve been complaining about trying to get recognized or get accepted for my talent by other musicians, but I got to learn to stop worrying myself. I’m at the point right now, where I make music for myself, and not really to other people. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I like getting new listeners, new fans, and new supporters who actually like my music, but my point is, I’m not worried about whether the reception of my music is going to be good or bad. I gotta stop that.

There are too many musicians out there who take themselves way too seriously. They expect all of their songs to be good, all the time, and they expect everyone to like them. You shouldn’t worry about the kind of reception or feedback you’re going to get with your songs. Just make music for you. As long as you enjoy your own songs, that’s all that should matter, ya know? Whether the reception is positive or negative, it’s all good. There are plenty of other bands out there who have had negative reception with their albums. The feedback is not always going to be positive.

While I would love nothing but positive feedback toward my music, I know it’s never going to happen. I’ll just take what I can get. Make the music, put it out there and see what happens. If the reception is great, I’ll take it and I will be flattered. If the reception is negative, I’ll take it and will be flattered with that too. Any kind of feedback is good. I don’t get defensive with negative critics toward my music like so many musicians out there do. I just let it go and ignore it.

I would like to get more well known as a singer/songwriter and music artist than a blogger, but oh fuckin’ well. There’s nothing I can do about that, but take it for what it is. People believe what they want to believe. If people are going to keep treating you like you’re some amateur or hobbyist kind of musician, keep in mind, that’s all opinionated. You’re just misunderstood. It’s just that the so called, “pro’s” out there want to think they’re much better than you. Yes, there are musicians out there that can play way better than me, but if they want to see you as a hobbyist, don’t listen to ’em. I’ve been accused of being a hobbyist kind of musician and continue to be called that even to this day, but do I give a fuck?

I’ll admit that I’m not a professional/advanced kind of guitarist yet, but I’m working my way up there. I’m learning and practicing.

My point being in this topic, to keep it all short and simple, you should only care about you in the world of music. Don’t worry about other peoples thoughts and opinions ’cause that’s all they are. I’ve been ignored by the local papers, and even local blogs like Crumbs.net, when I try to submit my music for them to plug in ’cause they think I don’t “fit” in the professional level of music, which is bullshit in my opinion. All musicians should be treated equal like I said before, regardless of the level of talent.

I just make music for the love and enjoyment of it. In other words, I make music to please me. I don’t mean to sound selfish, but this is what you must do, if you want to fight back at your nasty critics and win, is to be selfish. Don’t let ’em think they can take your dreams away ’cause that’s all they’re trying to do. They want to see you quit ’cause they don’t like what you do.

Film Review: Zero Dark Thirty

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Kyle Chanlder, Joel Edgerton

Directed by: Katherine Bigelow

Today, I finally went and saw, “Zero Dark Thirty”, and here is my review…

Plot/synopsis: The story focuses on a woman named, Maya, who is a CIA operative. She is the one who discovered the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden who is responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now the Seal Team 6 is sent out to hunt or kill the al-qaeda, leader.

Critics gave this movie positive reviews, calling it a masterpiece and saying this is the best film of 2012. The film also won many awards and got nominated for “Best Picture”, at the Oscars. After seeing the film finally, I look at all the good things the film has gotten, and I’m like really? The film was okay but wasn’t all that special. The writing was kind of a mess, and I don’t like the casting of Jessica Chastain. She pretty much ruined the movie. I found her pretty annoying and thought she was a bad actress.

The torture scenes that people were complaining about, weren’t all that gritty. Why attack this movie for the torture scenes when there are thousands of other war/politics based movies with torture in them? The torture in other war movies can be even more graphic than this one, for example, the movie, “Apocalypse Now”, and many others.

The only positive was that Katherine did a good job with the Bin Laden raid at his compound. That was done okay, but, it seems she stole a lot of material from the “No Easy Day” book. On top of all this, I’m not really sure if the Bin Laden raid is accurate from what was told in the media. Seal Team 6, is supposed to keep this stuff private and anonymous, so I’m pretty sure the stuff told in “No Easy Day” and the “Zero Dark Thirty” movie wasn’t the full story.

I thought this was kind of a boring and slow movie. I’m glad I waited on “Zero Dark Thirty” for my Top 15 Best Films of 2012 list, ’cause this film isn’t worth of that list, anyways. I think I’ll call this film, an “Okay” movie. I did like Kyle Chandler’s performance in it, though, the former, “Friday Night Lights” star. I’m sure Hollywood will make more Bin Laden movies, so hopefully, they can make a better one.

Score for “Zero Dark Thirty” = ** (Two stars as in “Okay”)

Biden on gun control next week…

Well Joe Biden is about to reveal his plans on gun control to President Obama next week, set for Tuesday. This ought to be interesting. Even though I’m 100% 2nd Amendment, and support the right to use guns fully, I’m actually looking forward to hearing Biden’s plans.

Better get your gun permits and stock up your guns people, before the government takes them away from us.

What’s even better that Biden plans to meet with the video gaming industry, more here. Yay, lets play the blame game on “Call of Duty”.

Like I said before, it’s unfair that the media will blame mass shootings on video games and movies.

Now I really wish, Mitt Romney was elected President. If he was, he would have handled things differently if he was President. You can’t disrespect the 2nd Amendment. Anybody who wants guns banned or wants more gun control, no longer gets my support, and I have blocked people from facebook for this reason.

Just a few worries about David Bowie’s return…

While it’s great that Bowie is finally back, I do have a few worries about his return to music. Allow me to explain…

1st of all, he’s going to have get accepted in the music industry since he’s been gone for so long. The industry has changed ever since he’s been gone. The only people who support Bowie’s return are his die hards who have stayed loyal to him after all these years. Fans of today’s generation may have a tough time, knowing who Bowie is. I’m sure young fans today are familiar with his classic songs, but his new stuff, people won’t know about. I personally think, Bowie came back for the fans who begged him to return and he finally responded. Of course, I’m sure Bowie wants to make new fans too.

Secondly, I’m also a little worried about how his new album is going to sell. Will it be a hit record or will it be a failure? Will his new album be worth the 10 year wait?

Destiny’s Child and Justin Timberlake just announced their comeback to music today, and they just overshadowed Bowie’s comeback. That’s a perfect example of how the industry changed. Sad, but it is what it is.

Back to Bowie, honestly though, Bowie used to be big and mainstream back in the day, but I think he lost a lot of recognition during his hiatus. He’s got a lot of work to do to get it all back. It’s going to be tough for him with the way this industry is today. It’s going to be tough for him to become a best selling artist again. Could he do it with his new album? We’ll have to wait and see how it sells in the Billboard.

Again, it’s good news that Bowie is back, but I’m afraid people out there may not care anymore.

Bands using obscenities in their marketing… a good idea???

Often, I would see bands in their facebook pages using obscenities or offensive material in their marketing. For example, profanity is pretty popular with local bands these days. I would see a lot of them use the F word a lot. They would also say stuff like, “Come out to this show, bitches”, and all that. You get the idea. I would even see some bands put up dirty jokes as a way to entertain their fans. Some bands would even make offensive photos for their flyers and stuff. Is using obscenities a good idea for your promotional material? Does this always help draw people to your shows or help get you new fans?

It all depends.

Keep in mind that this kind of marketing is not for everybody. If you want more respect and better opportunities with your music, the key to that is to make your marketing and promotional material, family friendly as possible. If you keep using obscenities in your promotion, then you’ll probably be stuck playing over 21 shows and you could get rejected by family friendly events. Sometimes you can turn venues off, and they might refuse to book you by how you put yourself out there.

Some music fans out there may even get the wrong idea about your band. They’ll look at the way your promote yourself and they’ll say something like, “Who the hell are these guys? I don’t want to support these hacks.” I believe that bands & artists that uses obscene stuff in your promotional material, I’m going to think that you’re the type of band who think they’re so cool. It’s gonna make you think you’re better than everyone. I understand that bands do this to entertain their fans but keep in mind, this kind of marketing isn’t for everyone.

If you want a wider audience and more respect, change the way you promote yourself. Bands do this ’cause they believe it’s okay to be themselves and act how they want to in local music, but in a way, you can’t always. It’s about being careful of how you put yourself out there.
