RIP: Roger Ebert 1942 – 2013

Two days ago, Roger Ebert, just put up a blog at the Chicago Sun Times, announcing that he is stepping down from reviewing movies for a while because his cancer came back. Two days later, Roger, sadly passed away all of a sudden. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I think that Roger knew that death was coming for him, this was just his way of preparing for it. In his blog post, “Leave of Presence”, you can tell that he was very careful with his writing so the people wouldn’t be suspicious of what is about to come. He tried his best in that blog post, not to  upset people.

Like I said before, love him or hate him, he is an influential movie critic, and legend. I used to watch his show, “At the Movies”, with Gene Siskel, all the time, when I was younger. I’ve read his reviews in the papers daily, and I would still follow him on a regular basis, until now. Like I said before, there will be nobody else like him. I didn’t agree with all his movie reviews. He gave some negative reviews of some of the movies that I liked, and he said a lot of stuff I disagreed with, but that’s why he always got my respect. He was honest, intelligent, and he wrote the best reviews better than anybody out there. Nobody will be able to top what he did.

From this point on, every time I do a review on a new film, I’m going to give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. In honor of Roger. Roger is survived by his wife, Chaz Hammelsmith. Roger Ebert was 70 years old.

Reports: Matthew McConaughey, is game for Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”!!!

As soon as Christopher Nolan announced a release date for his next sci-fi movie, “Interstellar”, his first interest to play the leading role was actor, Matthew McConaughey. Nolan wasted no time to get into negotiations with McConaughey, and it seems that the actor is definitely game to starring the leading ’cause he just confirmed it. McConaughey, is officially set for the lead.

Still no plot details and no information on what character, McConaughey, will be playing. Even though, that there is no plot or synopsis, you can get the hint with the title, “Interstellar”. What is “interstellar”? It’s a location of travelling among the stars, like the Milky Way for example. So, it’s definitely gonna be a space travel kind of movie!

I sure hope the story will be interesting, and I hope the plot will have nothing to do with evil aliens and other space monsters. We’ve had enough of those.

See the story, here.

Next, we should see who gets the big female lead, and other supporting characters. We should expect another big movie, full of big name actors.

How to get reviewed for your music…

After some bands & artists asking me to get their projects reviewed for my site, something kind of hit me. I know how I complained a lot that I never get reviewed for my music anywhere, but I am realizing that’s not the way to go about it. You’re not gonna get people to listen to your music and write about you by complaining about not getting noticed. How do bands & artists get their albums and other projects reviewed on music sites? Well, the simple solution is, that they approach them and ask them. To get reviewed, you have to go after that stuff yourself, just like you have to go out there and get gigs yourself. Good things, won’t fall in your lap in your music career. Gotta do something about it yourself.

Just find as many music websites and blogs as much as you can, and professionally ask them if they would like to hear your album to get reviewed. That’s how it’s done. That is how bands get their albums reviewed.

Whenever I release a new demo, or even release my debut album someday, I’ll keep this advice in consideration.

As for turning my blog into a “music critic” site goes, that doesn’t mean I’ll give up the entertainment/politics discussion and everything else. I just wanted to expand my horizons a little bit. It’s a little trick and ploy to help promote my site and help promote myself as a musician as well. Good marketing for my music and good marketing for other bands. Bands & artists usually don’t give out free music to people but they’ll give out free albums to bloggers and music critics just to get reviewed. They’ll even let bloggers & critics listen to their new albums early before release.

I enjoy promoting other bands and trying to get the word out for them, if I like their music that much. It’s good to support other bands, rather than loving yourself and jerkin’ yourself off, ya know? While I’m proud of my own music and like what I do musically, I’m more interested in supporting other musicians. It shows that you’re not selfish, and ego-driven, ya know what I mean? There are way too many bands & artists who only support themselves and not others. I don’t need to be like that. I get wrongfully and unfairly accused of being negative and hateful toward music, but it’s not true. I’m very supportive of musicians and the music scene in general. It’s good to support others and network in music.

It’s official… I’m not watching Wrestlemania 29 this year…

For the first time in a long time, I’m not watching Wrestlemania this Sunday night. Why? For a few reasons.  First of all, the WWE raised the price for Wrestlemania this year. They raised it up $60 standard, and $70 HD. Secondly, the card this year is crap. It’s like the same repeat of Wrestlemania. WWE can’t come up with new material. It’s always John Cena headlining the main event and taking the title, every year, and it’ll be the same this year. Cena becoming champ. Who would want to pay $70 for that?

There are a few matches, I want to see on WM-29, however like: Undertaker vs. CM Punk, Brock Lesnar vs. HHH, and Mark Henry vs. Ryback. Those would probably be the good matches. Other than that, the rest of the card is garbage this year.

I’m fed up with WWE. They are not the same anymore. Wrestling is dying, and it has changed over the years. I still love and respect, all the performers, I just want a better product, ya know?   Bring back the good wrestling we all want to see, not all that soap opera garbage.

I still have a love for professional wrestling, though. I always will be a fan. I just hate how wrestling is today. TNA Impact, is even having problems. I stopped watching TNA, ever since Hogan joined. Back to WWE, I’ll still have a lot of love for old school 80’s wrestling, and the Attitude Era in the 90’s. That’s where the great wrestling was at. It’s not like that anymore today. The business is horrible the way it is.

On Sunday, I will be following up on WM-29 during the live results, to see who wins and all. I’m gonna be watching, “Game of Thrones”, and, “Vikings”, this Sunday night instead. Glad “Game of Thrones” finally came back. Now that “Walking Dead” is gone, good TV will continue with GOT.

Back to WM-29, I’ll still watch it though. I’ll just wait for the DVD release.

NBC finally confirms Jimmy Fallon is taking over for Jay Leno, but can you trust them???

I hope Jimmy Fallon is skeptical of taken over for Jay Leno. Is Jay Leno really retiring this time? For good, hopefully? After all that Conan O’ Brien debacle, Jimmy should be a little worried. Jimmy hosts the new show for a few days, and the next thing you know, Leno, comes out of retirement again.

I can’t stand, Jay Leno. His show always sucked. Jay is not a funny guy (Jimmy is way funnier), and Jay is just boring as hell. If Jay is gonna be gone for good, I’d say good riddance. Now I wonder who’s going to take over Jimmy Fallon’s show, and what’s gonna happen with, The Roots?

I like Jimmy Fallon. I try to stay up and watch his show, but I’m asleep by then, these days. So I’m glad Jimmy will be on an hour early pretty soon. Lets hope NBC will stick to their word this time, and not have Jay Leno take over again like with all that Conan drama. Hopefully, it won’t be de ja vu, all over again.

Prayers go out to Roger Ebert…

He maybe the world’s most hated movie critic. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny, that the man is a legend. Roger Ebert, the world’s most famous film critic, announced that his cancer has returned and he’s cutting down on film reviews for that reason. He’s not leaving completely however, he still has other projects going on.

He said he’s keeping his website up, under new ownership.

Read Roger’s sad announcement, here.

If Roger passes away, it’s going to be a sad loss in the movie industry. Love him or hate him, we’ve all looked after him in some way or another. There will be no other movie critic like him. No other movie critic will be able to top what he does. Roger is irreplaceable.

I may not agree with a lot of his movie reviews, and yes, he said a lot of things that pissed me off too. Even when he’s in bad health currently, he has said a lot of controversial things. With all that being said, I’ve always respected the man. He’s one of the most honest guys out there. Not afraid to tell things like it is, he’s kind of like me in a way. He maybe uncomfortable to look at now, but I miss the old Roger pictured above.

The movie industry will never be the same when he goes. Prayers go out to Roger.

Album Review: Vinyl Floor “Peninsula”…

Vinyl-Floor1

The band, Vinyl Floor, is from Copenhagen, Denmark. They sent me their 2nd album, “Peninsula”, to get reviewed and I had to give this album a listen to twice before writing my thoughts about the album. I was pretty impressed with the album. The album has a mix of rock n’ roll songs and slow ballads. The rock songs have some great guitar riffs and there is some pretty impressive guitar solos too! The songwriting is good. If you dig stuff like Coldplay, you would probably like this album. I was most impressed with the album’s sound quality. The sound quality is pretty amazing. The story behind the album of Utopia and Dystopia, is pretty intriguing stuff. The songs on the album has a lot of heart and you will immediately hear that once the album starts. This band may be from a different country, but once you listen to this album, they don’t sound like from another country. They sound like an American band, for sure!

You should really give these guys a listen and check them out.

The description of the album, “Peninsula”, is under the line below. Thanks for the band, Vinyl Floor, for sending me this album.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Dear reader!

Enclosed is the new Peninsula album by Vinyl Floor. The album will be released both digitally and physically on the 20´th of February 2012 by Karmanian Records. It will also be released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by Divine Records/Broken Silence.

Peninsula is recorded in Sweden in the summer of 2011 and is mastered by Ryan Smith, Sterling Sound, New York.

The Vindla String Quartet – who has played with Forest and Crispian and Nina Persson from The Cardigans – contributed strings on seven songs.

Other Swedish musicians contributed horns and lap steel guitar.

Vinyl Floor hails from Copenhagen, Denmark and Peninsula will be their 2nd album.

Peninsula is a concept album divided into two parts – the well known literary concepts of Utopia and Dystopia. Utopia is the image of perfection where happiness and love reigns. Dystopia being the contrast where depression, sorrow and forfeiture reigns. In the world of philosophy these concepts may occur individually, but as many might agree, the world is never just black and white. Vinyl Floor therefore explores the tension between these two concepts. However, on the album, Utopia and Dystopia are more than just concepts – they also appear as worlds for human beings to reside in.

In the Utopia part you may find dystopian tendencies such as doubt, broken dreams and enmity. In the Dystopia part you may find traces of conscience and regret but also glimpses of hope for a better future. This dynamic amalgamation is the focus of the album and comes to life via the lyrics, moods and artwork.

Speaking of a peninsula, one of its characteristics is the connection to the main land but it´s also part of the foaming sea surrounding it. In the album concept the peninsula is a metaphor for mankind: ’No man is an island’. A man can´t exist without a bond to the surrounding world. A man is defined by his surroundings.

The artwork has been provided with an old fashioned compass which can be placed in many directions. On the surface the compass navigates geographically but the meaning is both objective and subjective. ‘Where am I going?’. ’Where are we going?’.

The first track Frames and Orchids takes off with the natural cycle – birth and bloom/spring. Track six Diverging Paths marks the fall of Utopia and Dystopias emergence from the ashes of Utopia. Track seven Force You Through kicks off Dystopia and unleashes its dark powers. Track twelve Frozen Moon reveals an opening through which the listener can escape Dystopia and go back to Utopia. What is in between all of this is entirely up to the listener.

About the “Film of the Days”…

Notice, how I’m quickly trying to stop doing those, “Film of the Day” topics on here? It’s true. It’s becoming annoying to do on here every day. Too much work, in my opinion. Instead of giving up on this completely, I’ll just move the “Film of the Day” topics to twitter instead. Kind of a pain to do daily. It’ll probably be easier to do on twitter. More fun there too.

Who needs a college degree to be a music critic? I can be one right now!!!

As you can see, I’m about to take my blog to a different direction. To those who have been paying attention, this site isn’t just about me at all, this site is here to entertain all of you. That’s why, I’m here. I’m hoping this site will have a big future in supporting unsigned bands & artists around the states, and around the world. I’m always looking for new talent to discover and support. Just to tell you one thing, I’m not trying to compete with other local blogs and other local music promoters like Crumbs, Capital Underground, Nippertown, etc. The goal here is to discover new talent and to help promote music. Not just local bands around my area, everywhere in the world. Help unsigned acts get a little more exposure. This can even be for indie and major label acts too, if I can get lucky enough to get ’em somehow.

I’ve already gotten a few responses coming in from unsigned acts all over the world.

I’m not always about myself when it comes to music. I’m very supportive of other bands & artists, and this is my way of showing my support for unsigned music. New section made for my site, “Bands & Artist Reviews”.

Lets hope this will be successful and get bigger as time goes along. Once in a blue moon, bands & artists will mail me free albums by regular mail or send me a video to review, and I’ll gladly do that. Hopefully, bands and artists will send me stuff a lot more in the future. One thing to keep in mind though, I won’t be selective or picky to review things. I won’t ignore the submissions I won’t like. I’ll be willing to review everything that comes my way. I won’t be a nasty & mean critic like Simon Cowell and others. I plan to be a nice & friendly one. If I don’t like something I hear, I’ll just be nice about it as best as possible.

I think the music world needs something like this, and this will be good. It’s gonna be fun for you to discover new talent you never heard of, and that’s the point of this. Getting heard and getting discovered.

Cool Video: “The Last of Us” game trailer that aired on the Walking Dead exclusively…

There might be just another game that I’m interested in this year. First, I got “Tomb Raider”, which I already played and finished. I plan on buying “Dead Space 3” sometime down the road still. There’s another new game coming out called, “Remember Me”, a futuristic action/adventure game I’m interested in. Now I think I might add this game to the list. I never heard anything about, “The Last of Us”, until I saw this on the, “Walking Dead”, last night. “The Last of Us”, looks interesting, though. Yes, of course, it’s another post-apocalyptic shooter game, but this one is third person shooting. This game looks pretty cool and the story sounds realistic than anything out there.

Video gaming is one of my favorite things to do. I’m just getting back into it. Video games is a great way to get your mind off everything and get yourself focused. That’s part of why I like video gaming. They help me think.

Check it out, here.
